Destructive vs. non-destructive estimation
June 19 @ 5:45 pm
There’s a difference between destructive and non-destructive changes that we understand intuitively in the design world. It’s the difference between a PSD with layers and a flattened JPEG export.
Destructive changes lose important context by destroying vital information. When we give estimations we often give a single number – which is a “flattened” data point without any context.
But once lost the context, it’s hard (or sometimes even impossible) to go back to the original thinking and make meaningful decisions.
In this talk I’ll deep dive into non-destructive estimation. We’ll explore how better estimation practices can help you avoid losing context which might jeopardise your project’s chance of success.
We’ll talk about all the things you throw away when you collapse an estimation into a single number, and how you can learn to give meaningful and useful estimations in the future.
